From the Author
But for many children, escape from the ordinary world - where they might be experiencing poverty, neglect or abuse - is not possible without help. The N.S.P.C.C. works to protect and improve the lives of vulnerable kids, so that's why it seemed appropriate to publish a collection of children's stories in aid of the charity.
The Short Stories Group hope that, having bought this book (thank you!) you will discover a story or two to share with your children or grandchildren at bedtime, something to read to your pupils at the end of the school day, and maybe (dare we hope) find one or two which recreate the childish delight you used to feel when you read your favourite story by the light of a torch under the bedclothes.
Why not turn the page and let the magic begin...

About the authors
Vanessa Wester’s main published work is ‘THE EVOLUTION TRILOGY’, which is comprised of HYBRID, her debut novel, followed by COMPLICATIONS and RETURN. The prequel to the trilogy, EMILY, is also available. This collection of paranormal romance novels takes the reader from Southampton, U.K., to the Amazon, Brazil, in a tale of twisted chance and consequence.
In addition, she has written a novelette called FIRST DATE, which is based on her true story. She has also published, and included stories in, six anthologies to raise money for fantastic causes.
Vanessa also painstakingly put together a collection of original diary entries and letters of her Beanland ancestors in the book, JOURNEY TO GIBRALTAR. The letters were sent to and from locations such as Lancashire, Jamaica and eventually Gibraltar. It gives the reader an idea of what life was like around 1870, and the everyday occurrences of Gibraltar back then, and was published to commemorate 150 years of BEANLAND ancestors on the famous rock.
Writing is one of her passions, reading the other. The day she decided to start writing her ideas down she found another way to lose herself in a book, whilst finding an outlet for her imagination. It is the best way she can think of to escape from everyday life.

Gary Alan Henson was born in Levelland, Texas, among the dust storms, tumbleweeds, swamp coolers, cattle ranches and oil fields.
His family moved to Boulder, Colorado in the mid 60's and yes, he does remember it. He joined the US Nuclear Navy at 17, married his lovely, childhood sweetheart, Debbie, and then 'saw the world' for 9 years. Though it was a somewhat oddly shaped world; seen through the periscope lens of a submarine.
Storytelling is an everyday part of his life. He has a tiny but insistent muse sitting on his shoulder, always feeding him new and sometimes 'challenging' ideas. The good ones he tries to put to paper, the rest he tries to bury very, very deeply.

I have always loved the written word. I write mainly for children, having published two short story collections for younger readers, and six middle grade fantasy adventure novels - both standalone and series titles - featuring strong female leads.
If you want to write stories yourself, check out Squidge's Guide to Super Stories, a creative writing guide suitable for young and novice writers.
I also enjoy writing short stories for adults and have had a dozen or so published in various anthologies. My first solo anthology of short stories is called Hollow Daughter.
Urban fantasy and historical fiction author J.A. Ironside masquerades by day as member of the county library service, which strangely enough has less to do with books than you would think.
Jules grew up in Dorset in a house full of books, which probably explains a lot about how her mind works. You might think that folklore, fringe science, history, physics, magic and supernatural mystery wouldn’t go all that well together, but she’s hell bent on proving they do. Her urban fantasy series Harker & Blackthorn is now ten books long and counting. It features a sentient museum because someone needs to keep track of what’s going on. Unveiled – another UF series set in the same universe – is now complete.
Jules is also determined to show that historical fiction can be both factually correct and funny. The King’s Knight series is set during the tumultuous reign of Richard II, while the sweeping Oath and Crown Duology – co-authored with Matthew Willis – follows the events leading up to and around the Battle of Hastings.
When pried her away from her books, Jules enthusiastically engages in martial arts and playing the piano, although never at the same time. At least not yet. She lives on the edge of the Cotswold way with her boyfriend creature and two hell’s kittens. Find out more at www.jaironside.com
Show Less
Stephen Mark has just published his first full length novel. If he's spared, he'll publish a few more. But they'll need to come to fruition a bit faster than, The Paradise Knights, which was conceived when he was several inches smaller, in both height and width. Wrestling words from where they were hidden has been a job that might have taxed Merlin himself. Still, they're all out now and he is much the wiser, and larger, for it. Everyone has a book in them, or so it is said. Well, there are several more jostling for position, and any minute now they will join together with 'Paradise' in happy coexistence... hopefully.
Of course, while all this ruminating has been going on, other of life's joys have occupied his time, including a short story in each of the anthologies featured here. However, none of them compare with the satisfaction of seeing his name on the cover of his own novel. There now; immortality is assured.
My name is Christopher Lakin and I was born on, or near the banks of the River Trent in 1962, just after the last ice age.
As a career I was a lorry driver for 27yrs, which gave me a bad back and a portly belly - too much rich food. I have lived in three different countries, but only one at a time: the UK, Tennerife and Spain. After coming home I settled down with my lovely wife, Tina, and we bought a narrow boat, although I was still driving and was away all week. We had some wonderful times on the boat and eventually moved to Loughborough on a Marina - which is a village for boats.
In 2009 we moved again and built our own mooring on a farm, absolutely in the wilds: we had snakes through the windows and water rats on the deck. that was really funny.
However, I was diagnosed with degenerative osteoarthritis in my spine, hips, knees and shoulders at the end of 2009, and was told I would not work again, as a driver. That year my grandchildren bought me a teddy bear for Christmas, dressed in a coastguard's uniform - very appropriate for a narrow boat captain. So I set about creating the series of 'Captain Grisswold with his Crew and Friends'.
