Awakening: Book One of the Geis Paperback – September 24, 2013

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 129 ratings

...because some Celtic stories won't be contained in myth. A little magic has always run in sixteen-year-old McKayla McCleery's family-at least that's what she's been told. McKayla's eccentric Aunt Avril travels the world as a psychic for the FBI, and her mother can make amazing delicacies out of the most basic of ingredients. But McKayla doesn't think for a second that the magic is real-it's just good storytelling. Besides, McKayla doesn't need magic. She recently moved to beautiful Star Valley, Wyoming, and already she has a best friend, a solo in her upcoming ballet recital-and the gorgeous guy in her physics class keeps looking her way.  When an unexpected fascination with Irish dance leads McKayla to seek instruction from the mute, crippled janitor at her high school, she learns that her family is not the only one with unexplained abilities.  After Aunt Avril comes to Star Valley in pursuit of a supernatural killer, people begin disappearing, and the lives of those McKayla holds most dear are threatened. When the janitor reveals that an ancient curse, known as a geis, has awakened deadly powers that defy explanation, McKayla is forced to come to terms with what is real and what is fantasy.  A thrilling debut novel based in Celtic mythology, Awakening is a gripping young adult fantasy rife with magic, romance, and mystery.

I loved this book!

This book was so different from anything I have ever read.

Apparently, after reading the author's bio, I learned that she grew up in the same town that she wrote her book about, and she is a champion Irish dancer, which is why her lingo for the dancing was accurate, which really placed you into the novel because the author really knew her stuff. No flaky descriptions. This was well written.

So on that note, if you don't care for Irish dancing, or Celtic mythology, then this book might not be for you. Like I said before, I have never read a book like this, but I loved it. It was amazing.

Our protagonist is a teenage girl, McKayla. She loves to dance, has a typical high school crush, sweet best friend, loving family, and crazy aunt. But McKayla is special. Strange things are going on, and through the help of McKayla's gifted aunt, she learns of her own special abilities. A creepy woman is sneaking around town and has a foul purpose that McKayla's aunt is trying to unearth.

There is just something so unique about this story. The author focuses a lot on dance and the emotions behind it. A mysterious lame janitor has a remarkable ability to dance, and McKayla is drawn to him and the emotion behind his moves.

The scary lady keeps showing up, and circumstances become dangerous. We never really learn anyone's motivation right away. I think that is why I was drawn. I feel that the protagonist's own emotion at discovering her music and her new gift pulled me along.

Until all of a sudden, disaster strikes, and that's when I knew I loved this novel. Hero's emerge, magic reveals, and the mysteriousness blossoms. I hope you like banshees. They are in this novel, and it is cool and scary. The author brought in the element of mythology and a whole other world. Oooo, and there is a dragon. I think that gives too much away. But the novel is so magical. I think that some readers might be put off by all the dancing, but it only made the novel better. The dancing was a way for the main character to learn her abilities, so for me, it worked, and I grew with the character.

I will most certainly be reading the next books and checking out more by this author.

Written very well, smooth language, quick read. Clean read. Great for 13 year olds and up.

This book exceeded my expectations. This is not just another coming of age story. Ms. Dorrity has woven Celtic myth into this whole family's history with an ancient curse they never had a clue about. The author's passion for Irish dance shines through in the emotion of her words. I was totally swept away into the dance, the history, and the characters of this book.

The story is mainly told through McKayla's eyes interspersed with third person, the transitions are smooth and well placed. The story threads were woven together with thoughtful consideration to the overall plot. The stories are heart wrenching and fascinating. I was blown away when I learned this was Ms. Dorrity's debut novel. I thought the story started off strong but I found myself a little overwhelmed with all the details and was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep up. It turned out I didn't have the problem I anticipated thanks to Ms. Dorrity's adept writing style. At about a third of the way in the story takes off and I had trouble putting the book down to sleep. The story comes to a satisfying ending with a nice twist to draw you into the next book. This is going to be an enchanting series.

Format/Typo Issues: I found no significant issues.

This is one of my first ventures into the paranormal genre, but I thought it was a really unique angle. Not the typical vampires or ghosts (no spoilers here). It was much more intriguing, and there were many scenes thereafter with cool ideas or action that made me wish it were a movie. Sometimes there were a few too many details about dance steps or cooking for me (these are the author's other passions according to the bio), but everything was eloquently written and free of editorial errors. The mystery was good, and the paranormal element was just spooky enough to be exciting without being freaky. The romance element was very real from McKayla's perspective, and I felt myself empathizing with her roller coaster emotions. Both were handled really well, without any graphic sex or gore. The grand finale "battle scene" was innovative and basically awesome, like a really creative fantasy by someone who refuses to follow every cliche.

It also jolted me initially that the point of view switched back and forth between first person from a teen perspective to third person omniscient. Once I got used to it, though, it didn't bother me much.

Overall, I liked the story, thoughI kept waiting for it to grip me a little tighter. About half way through it did, and then it didn't let go! A worthwhile read for YA/paranormal/sweet romance fans all the same.

The cover got my attention, the synopsis sold me and from the first page I was sucked in. This story was very well written with great characters you could just fall in love with. The author really helps you feel the emotions of the characters. I often found myself feeling scared and heartbroken and excited along with the characters. I really loved how the author told us the back story for a couple of the characters that seemed to be very mysterious. This way we were able to get to know them better and understand why they are the way they are. I really enjoyed this book and am excited for the next book. I would defiantly recommend this book.

This book is aimed at young adults - but believe me it is just as enjoyable as a not-so-young adult.

They say not to judge a book by its cover - but I LOVED both cover and novel!!!

The characters become so alive and real through wonderful writing and storytelling. It is set in America and is a mystic tale of celtic mythology that left me spellbound. I was completely enraptured from beginning to end and couldn't put it down. It has everything: romance, mythology, adventure, triumph and Irish dance (though you don't need to know about it to love the book).

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I cannot wait for the second book in the series!
